OK...

The original homeworld tools were MS-environment based command line utilities.

My thought is to wait and see what HW-SDL has done since it went off the air, and then start doing direct translations of still-needed tools using...

g c c / + + 4.0.1

Hmmm... it FINALLY worked. The new security module for phpBB apparently throws a fit if you mention the Gnu C Compiler by its commonly used initials.

Which is rather inconvenient for a forum devoted to coding, dontchathink? :)

I know the 4.0 version of g-c-c hasn't endeared itself with its stricter adherence to standards and cutting of some popular legacy code support, but it seems that using that standard for the needed tools will insure a long life for the new codebase, and, of course, the most easily ported code.

Thoughts?

I somehow missed this thread... Anyway, this is definitely a good idea. There is a new root-level tools directory in the HomeworldSDL source tree. It currently only has two tools in it though:

biggie - .big archive file reader/extractor
kas2c - converts mission definitions from their native KAS language to the C equivalent

but there were many more included with the original source that will be useful - particularly for modders.

I realize this is an old thread, but I'm setting up my compile environment under Ubuntu linux and wonder which tools are now (2012) available outside of the Windows environment?
