I've imported BTG, Homeworld's background editor, into the tools directory. It is a straight copy of what Relic originally released and is a Visual C project (not sure which version), see BTG.vcproj.

Before attempting to make it cross-platform it would be nice know that it still works on Windows, so would a Windows developer mind trying to compile it please? Don't waste too much time on it if it doesn't; I'm sure you have more important/interesting things to keep you occupied! :) Thanks.

BTG seems to mostly work ok (compared to the original relic build) after stopping 1 assertion.

> it doesn't look in the current working directoy (say btg/) for the bitmaps dir. this need to be fixed.

You might want to investigate Crook's utility for converting raster images into the vector BTG formats. I did the porting of the C++ back-end, and I know it can be made cross-platform.

It would require a re-write of the front side to it but it's easy enough to explain. If I can write it in VB6 I'm sure someone can replicate it in C.

The relic BTG tool was soooooo cumbersome to use I'm surprised at the quality of backgrounds they got.

For anyone interested, this is the paper I read that made me think I could use this idea for making BTG's. I was researching for an automatic lodding tool I was making at the time. Look at the last page and you'll see why :):
