Hi all !

I'm an average-to-noob linux user (I'd say expert but boy does the rabbit hole go down infinitely).

I know my way around a terminal and wine and Hardware passthrough soon too.

but I'm struggling with this.

as far as I can tell the steps to get native Homeword under linux are :
  • Download the "homeworldsdl-Linux-0.5alpha" folder
  • Download the Source code? (and run with wine to get the extracted files)
  • kinda lost at this point...

the source code folder contains "devstats.dat" but not "Homeworld.big" nor "Update.big" and those aren't found in the "homeworldsdl-Linux-0.5alpha" either so where are they?

also the guide says I need :
SDL 1.2.11
SDL sound library
OpenGl library install : Mesa or Proprietary OpenGl implementation provided with Nvidia or Ati drivers.

I'm pretty persuaded OpenGl is currently correctly set up on my ubuntu since i have the default AMD driver and glxgears works.

as for SDL 1.2 I ran :

sudo apt install libsdl1.2-dev libsdl1.2debian libsdl-gfx1.2-5 libsdl-gfx1.2-dev libsdl-gfx1.2-doc libsdl-image1.2 libsdl-image1.2-dbg libsdl-image1.2-dev libsdl-mixer1.2 libsdl-mixer1.2-dbg libsdl-mixer1.2-dev libsdl-net1.2 libsdl-net1.2-dbg libsdl-net1.2-dev libsdl-sound1.2 libsdl-sound1.2-dev libsdl-ttf2.0-0 libsdl-ttf2.0-dev

I think I'm good. If i understand correctly I'm supposed to install and update homeworld under wine. (then update homeworld to latest using the 1.5 patch provided at : http://homesource.nekomimicon.net/ )
and then I can find and copy Homeworld.big" and "Update.big" and place them in the "homeworldsdl-Linux-0.5alpha" folder.

and after that I can continue with the INSTALL guide.

also I've located a "homeworld.big" file under my steam Homeworld Remastered directory in the HW 1 folder I'd like to know if that works.

EDIT : Okay so since I wanted to cut corners (I have to dig up a CD drive and retrieve my HW CD from my parent's place) I tried copying all the data from the Homeworld 1 Homeworld Remastered steam folder but that let me down a bit :

Code:
t@ts:/media/t/e9f70369-a3af-4c6e-b2cf-57ade77c38de/homeworldsdl-Linux-0.5alpha/bin$ ./homeworld
Scanning for newer files in .
Compared 23 filesystem files to bigfile.
0 files found newer in filesystem.
homeworld: ../../../src/Game/Debug.c:184: dbgFatalf: Assertion `0' failed.
Aborted
t@ts:/media/t/e9f70369-a3af-4c6e-b2cf-57ade77c38de/homeworldsdl-Linux-0.5alpha/bin$

In the end I got the CD reader and CD and installed homeworld (on a windows machine) updated it ran it to check that it works. then copied the entire CD and install dir to two separate folders on my linux.

I made a copy of the install dir and added the bin "homeworld" provided in the "homeworldsdl-Linux-0.5alpha" folder.

This is the result:
Code:
t@ts:/media/t/e9f70369-a3af-4c6e-b2cf-57ade77c38de/homeworldsdl-Linux-0.5alpha/files/HW2 (copy)$ ./homeworld
Scanning for newer files in .
Compared 61 filesystem files to main & update bigfiles.
0 files found newer than main bigfile in filesystem.
0 files found newer than update bigfile in filesystem.
SDL_GL_LoadLibrary(libGL.so): Failed loading libGL.so
SDL_GL_LoadLibrary(libGL.so): Failed loading libGL.so
Fatal Error: Couldn't initialize default rendering system
.Error creating window
t@ts:/media/t/e9f70369-a3af-4c6e-b2cf-57ade77c38de/homeworldsdl-Linux-0.5alpha/files/HW2 (copy)$

here's what the folder looks like :

I tried copying the 'HW_Comp.vce' and 'HW_Music.wxd' from the Homeworld CD to the game directory overtiring the originals

and same for the 'devstats.dat' from the wine-extracted source files.

but the result remains the same.

I've tried "sudo ln -s /usr/lib32/libGL.so /usr/lib/libGL.so.1" but that did not help. glxgears still works fine.
